Pyometra
(Adapted from an article written I M Evans a K White)
Definition : This is the most important reproductive disease in a bitch's reproductive tract.
The uterus becomes filled with an accumulation of large amounts of fluid, which
may or may not contain bacteria.
Cause : The cause is not entirely known but it is associated with hormonal imbalances,
which causes sensitivity to progesterone. This condition can also be induced by
the administration of estrogen in cases of misalliance.*
Signs : This condition usually occurs four to six weeks after a bitch has been in season
and mainly in older bitches.
The toxemia (blood poisoning) which results from fluid in the uterus is absorbed
into the blood stream and gives rise to signs of excessive thirst, frequent
urination, abdominal distension, vomiting, in appetence, shock and death.
Male dogs will confuse the odor of the bitches in this condition, with that of a
bitch on heat.
There are two types of pyometra, open and closed. In open cases there is a thick
red-brown, evil smelling discharge from the vulva. In the closed cases there is
no discharge, but the bitch is far more acutely ill.
Treatment : If at any time you suspect your bitch is suffering from this condition, do not
hesitate and take her immediately to a vet. Depending on how far the condition
has progressed, surgical removal of the uterus may be necessary. In the open
cases giving drugs to contract the uterus may treat the condition. However, if
such is the case, the condition may recur at the next heat.
Prevention : The only obvious way to prevent this condition from happening is to spay the
bitch. In cases where you may want to keep your bitch intact, the chemical
control of estrus can reduce the risk of pyometra in a bitch.
Misalliance : * If your bitch is mated unintentionally and you do not wish to have a litter,
get her to the Vet at once for an injection to avert the pregnancy.
This injection has to be given to a bitch within 24 hours from the time of the
mating.
The injection basically reverses the hormones of a bitch's estrus cycle;
therefore her heat will begin all over again.
For positive control of future heats, rather spay your bitch. This type of
treatment (injection) to avert an unwanted pregnancy in a bitch is very
dangerous and may cause side effects such as pyometra. Always remember that
prevention is better than cure!!'
