Judges Critiques sshc ch show august 26th 2007

Henrik Soeborg - dogs

First of all I will thank the Club for inviting me to judge. It was as much an honour and a pleasure as last time I visited Scotland for judging.

Again at this show I was pleased to see that so many exhibitors actually was prepared and had trained well before the show. This goes especially for the youngsters as it can be quite a job to make good performance with an untrained dog. I am quite sure exhibitors within the Danish breed club could learn from that.

My general opinion of the dogs presented for me was that I saw a variety of differences in type although I did not see any but a few that to me was out of range. Most of the dogs showed typical heads, some better than others, sound and balanced gait with good reach in front and drive from hindquarters. A few had problems with shoulders and straight upper arms, another few did have quite oversized ears and very tight tail carriage. This is not the best time to examine coats as practically all Siberians will be shedding. But at any time you should be able to recognise if the texture is correct. I did see several dogs with much too short coat. The coat on a sled dog must be a typical double coat and it is so important that this polar specific survive.

Quite a lot of Siberians – normally from racing lines - do have oversized ears, coat like a gun dog, too sloping croup, faulty tail carriage, too much tuck up and rounded top line, probably due to the fact that breeders of these lines seem to care much more about how they run than how they look. On the other hand Siberians that are too heavily built, excessive bone structure, clumsy, showing unbalanced gait etc are to me as wrong as the skinny racing type.
To me extreme types are both “out of range” and I would consider continued breeding on such extremes an insult to the breed.

Well enough of this. We do all have opinions about what is right and what is wrong.

As to my winners I did find them excellent representatives of the breed, perfect in proportions and size. They had typical heads, very good polar details, good substance without being too much and above all they had excellent balanced movements. As my colleague Mr. Luxmoore and I did not agree in the final challenge, I was of course very pleased to notice that the referee choose my best dog for BOB.

I hope that my line ups and the written critiques reflect what I was looking for during judging.

To the members of board and committee thank you for a very nice show and for giving me the opportunity to judge at the Championship Show. A special thanks to Laurna for driving me around and for a job well done in the ring, together with John.

I wish the SSHC and members all the best for the future.

SSHC Ch Show 26th August 2007
Simon Luxmoore- Bitches

It was a great pleasure to be invited to judge the SSHC championship show in its second year. I was pleased with both the size (107 dogs) and excellent overall quality of my entry. The venue was not ideal in terms of the size of the ring and the noise levels, but I know well how hard the excellent committee is trying to get things 'right' and affordable show venues don't actually 'grow on trees'. The dogs themselves were excellent in temperament, generally well presented and sufficiently well handled for me to 'take a view' without either the exhibitor or I becoming frustrated. Conditioning and muscling was better than I have previously experienced - very positive from my point of view. There were no bad bites at all, coats were in and out, but structurally the only real concern I had was with a few flat/short croups.
My thanks to the SSHC Committee for an excellent day, and in particular to my super steward Lindsey Sutherland.
Minor Puppy (11)
1st Cake's Fastrax Kadmiel - Smart g/w, nice feminine head, good reach of neck, a good top line, may be a 'touch up behind', in good weight, well balanced and very sound on the move. Coped well with the conditions and was well handled and presented.
2nd Hart's Artictrek Kiyonari - Nice standard fitting head, with a keen alert expression, grey/brown/white youngster with a very good shoulder and excellent drive from her rear quarters.Strong top line and well muscled. Good croup tail set and carriage. She was just a little 'loose' throughout compared to 1.
3rd Forrest's Muiryetts Sweet Orla

Puppy Bitch (12 1a) - A nice class
1st Scott and Hickmott's Winterdance Zsa Zsa. Classic feminine standard fitting head, refined muzzle, almond eyes, and quite able to get her ears up as required! Strong and well conditioned throughout and held an excellent top line. Well angled croup with a well set on tail. Nicely balanced front and rear and free flowing on the move. A well deserved BPIS.
2nd Spowart's Sassicaia Loopy Lippy For Woodsong
Very similar in type to 1 but not quite so forward in her maturity. Will benefit from a season in harness. Nice head, very high set ears, correct almond eye shape, good reach of neck. Medium bone, strong top line, well angulated and correct height to length proportions. Not quite as positive on the move as 1 on the day. Bags of potential.
3rd Paterson's (Callum) Aceca's Maamme.

Junior Bitch (8 1a)
1st Patrick's Coldasice Cebalrai
Smart b/w youngster, classic 'Irish markings', medium bone well arched neck, well balanced front and rear and free and easy on the move. Excellent coat, sound top line and good croup. Wouldn't want any more length relative to current height.
2nd Foard/Collins Bifrost Little Kazanika
A real contrast in type, this is clearly a slow maturing youngster who again will benefit with a couple of years of work. Refined 'foxy' head, extremely well muscled throughout, sufficient medium bone, quite 'up on the leg' and tense, at what I understood to be her first show. In such circumstances she did well and will have more relaxing days in the future! Short tight coat - somewhat symptomatic of the climate I suspect! Excellent feet. Nice ground covering movement when she settled.
3rd Brown's Bifrost Little Lena of Polarcreek

Yearling Bitch (11 3a)
1st Studley's Forstal's Yentna
A very powerful youngster who had the muscle and conditioning of all bar the BCC winner. Nice head, good stop, high set ears, strong well arched neck set on powerful shoulders. Good top line, nice medium plus bone, good 'fit' well cushioned feet. Good curve of stifle, plenty of drive and absolutely sound on the move. Sufficient weight!.
2nd Patrick's Coldasice Cebalrai
3rd Sharp's Forstals Xarea

Novice Bitch (7 1a)
1st Drummond's Sasoolka Carti Mandua
This is a super g/w bitch who was quite excitable on the day. A tad down on her ideal working weight, she has still a lot of maturing to do. Super head, almond shaped, obliquely set eyes, nice stop and high set ears. Strong well arched neck, running into a strong top line. Great angulation front and rear, good length to height ratio, very easy ground covering gait. Good croup, tail set and carriage. Coat failed to make the event. Excellent potential and one to take home.
2nd Hogg's Sontells Solarmist at Kazyic
Another quality bitch, with a super head, balanced throughout, sound coming and going, covered a good deal of ground but did not quite have the conditioning of 1, indeed a little 'loose' throughout. Well angulated and possessing a well angled croup.
3rd Patrick's Coldasice Cebalrai

Undergraduate Bitch (4)
1st Devlin's Erifdere Stelli Mist
Quality g/w with typical head. This girl was quite 'loose' and would benefit from some hard conditioning. She has all the attributes and much potential. Well angulated, absolutely sound on the move, correct medium bone, good croup, nice tail set and carriage. Good turn of stifle, nice, but unfit feet. Good overall proportions.
2nd Halliday's Tuscarora Iomaghaoith With Itanca
Foxy refined head, aloof in expression. This b/w is balanced front and rear, carries her top line well, covered plenty of ground and was very well muscled. Correct medium bone.
3rd Reilly's Tchourek's Wind Flower

Graduate Bitch (3)
1st McAleavey's Zateizzi Valleresso At Wolfpaws
Classic head, refined and feminine. Still young with maturity still bringing opportunity. Correct bone, rangy but in good overall proportion. Excellent conditioning which gave a very pleasing outline on the move. Excellent forward reach and an effortless gait. Good tail set on a well angled croup.
2nd Mitchell's Zaisan Zarita Zeena at Wolfangel
A nice bitch, more compact in structure and type. Good bone, nice shoulder, sufficient croup. Very well muscled, well handled and presented.
3rd Wood and Taylor's Lynaska's Monaliza

Post Graduate (13 2a)
Certainly a very strong class.
1st Wakker's Snowspeeder's Coruscant At Ceannabeinne
Very typical g/w. Good medium plus bone, a good sized bitch in great condition and well muscled throughout. Powerful shoulders, good depth and length of chest, strong loin, good curve of stifle. Excellent ground covering gait, free and easy without exaggeration. In nice coat, well handled and presented. Well deserved RBCC.
2nd Mahar-Brown and Casola's Podrical's Jetset Jilly
Another quality exhibit. In beautiful coat this b/w has much to commend her. Typical head, good profile, proportions correct in all respects. Moved with an easy gait and showed her strong top line and excellent condition to advantage.
3rd Amphlett and Sym's Polarnights Quaver At Sybasprinter

Mid Limit Bitch (5)
1st McAleavey's Wolfskin Kurcheanna At Wolfpaws
Another nice bitch from this kennel. B/g/w absolutely outstanding on the move. Needed only the briefest of 'circuits' to win the class. Good standard fitting head, good reach of neck, strong steady top line, well angled croup, well set tail and carriage. Another benefiting from good condition. Great feet.
2nd Livingstone's Erifdere Silver Arrow of Lasinski JW
Very much a favourite of mine, she just didn't have the coat and condition of 1on the day. She has a lovely standard fitting head and expression, is well proportioned throughout, goes like a train on the move, and a certainty for many future top honours. But the ring, and her condition was never going to work to her benefit on the day.
3rd McKean's Kazyic's Yeha Noha At Yawren.

Limit Bitch (19)
1st Hannam's Woodsong Babyface of Charoite
Her name belies the superb clean features of this bitches lovely head. B/w she has high set ears and a keen dark eye. Top of the range in height she is structured with good proportions, has nice medium bone, good forward reach and plenty of drive from the rear. Needs to be, and is, well handled since she can adopt a lazy gait when not concentrating. Superbly muscled, strong top line, good length of loin and a nice croup. The tail which is well set on, is irritatingly carried in a ring on occasions, not a fault, but a distraction. Will continue to mature well. Coat 'in the Dyson'.
2nd Emery's Sassicaia Rionach Via Navajos
More compact in type than 1 this lovely bitch could not match her presentation or conditioning. She has a refined 'foxy' head and is beautifully constructed. I just feel that if I saw her on a cold winters day in great condition she would be 'unbeatable'. Good shoulder placement, absolutely excellent hindquarters and a nice top line gave a most pleasing impression. Well handled.
3rd Drummond's Keriquel Sanu Taboche at Sasoolka
Whilst she has quite a 'strong' head for a bitch, this is in every respect another 'take home whilst the owner is not watching' dog. Super example of the Breed.

Open Bitch (14 1a)
A very strong class.
1st Foard/Collins Lara-Ke's Teklanika At Bifrost (Imp)
An outstanding example of the Breed. This grey has a feminine head with white/blue eyes, which are obliquely set. The churlish might comment on a slightly longer muzzle, but a good stop and tight fitting lips, together with the high set ears, complete an attractive not necessarily 'pretty' head. Structurally she has good leg length and excellent angulation, fore and aft. Nice medium bone, shown in lean hard condition but in good weight. Her top line is strong, loin of good length, excellent croup and a good tail set and carriage. Her double coat is short and tight. But it is on the move that she excels with an easy 'go all day' ground covering gait. Effortless and efficient. Her forward reach highlighted her well angled pasterns. Fit well 'knuckled up' and thickly padded feet. A comfortable winner of the class. Well handled and presented. BCC, RBIS, BVIS
2nd Barry and Grisbrooke's Azgard Sitka
A very nice b/w who I have admired for some time. She wasn't quite herself on the day, her facial expression alone suggesting that she would rather be outside!
More compact than 1 she still has all the attributes of quality - good angulation front and rear, a quick yet ground covering gait, absolutely correct bone, and she was shown in good condition. Good pasterns, fit feet and well let down hocks were all to admire. Strong top line, nice croup and a good tail set. She has plenty of successes in front of her.
3rd Whitehead's Ch Jacalous Shanay

Veteran (5)
1st Cake's Winterdance Keziah By Fastrax
This is a bitch I have also admired for some years. That this eight year old has not achieved her title frankly amazes me. With the appearance of a three year old I think she still has some time to achieve her deserts. B/w, she is just outstanding on the move, ground covering, efficient and smooth. She has a lovely feminine head and expression, but unusual markings cannot have been 'her fortune' when on previous occasions she has been so close to top honours. Good bone and shown in ideal weight with surprisingly good hard condition. Keep at it!
2nd Jones' Kivaniks Berlin
Amazing for a 10 year old. Great in outline, good overall structure, and another great mover. Only the lack of coat and condition stopped a very close challenge to 1. Well handled and presented.
3rd Studley's Arcticstars Siberian Ice at Laskas

Special Vintage Bitch (3)
1st Briggs Ch Gwaihir Astrodinka at Torraneas
All but 10 years ago this veteran now in her twelfth year was my BOB at Crufts. She retains many of those qualities, and probably enjoys her day at the show more today than she did then. Nothing to say that I have not said before, but her face and expression is that of a four year old. Simply amazing. Shown in excellent condition, has avoided 'the spread' of age and it was a pleasure to give her one more first place.
2nd Shaw's Alascotias Dream At Shaskaa
A shade under thirteen, but still as sound as they come and go on the move. Struggling a little for coat condition, she still loved her return to the ring. Nice structure, medium plus bone, but still able to hold her topline as if there was a glass of champagne on it - without spilling a drop.
3rd Hay's Mjolfjell Saelig of Sura
Another great old girl - it's awful that you have to place them at all! Still displaying the attributes that have proved her and her offspring to be credits to the Breed. Just thought she looked as if she climbed in to the biscuit barrel the night before and remained there unnoticed for some time!
